The Rose Garden Serenades Bamberg

The Rose Garden Serenades, which take place every year in Bamberg during the summer months, have become one of the favourite enjoyments of classical music lovers.

Already during the reign of the prince bishops the rose garden of the New Residence was used for the court’s musical entertainment. The charming pavilion projected by the court architect Michael Küchel, dating back to the year 1756 and adorned with enchanting stucco works of the four seasons, depicts the late Baroque style from its most spirited viewpoint. The sweet rose scent, the allegorical stone figures by the sculptor Ferdinand Dietz, the silently gurgling fountain and the splendid view over the old town’s roofs confer the rose garden – hidden between two wings of the Residence – a fairy atmosphere, inviting the visitor to linger in tranquility and leisure. During the summer season it offers the perfect ambience for classical concerts.

In 1962, when a beech planted by the Wittelsbachers had to be chopped down, the violonist and confectioner Ingo Graupner took this as an opportunity of dedicating a “Rose Garden Serenade” to the separation from the tree. A chamber orchestra with members of the “Bamberger Symphoniker” played under the conduct of Hermann Dechant. The positive echo of this musical event led to the organization of several other concerts in the rose garden in the forthcoming years. Thus the Rose Garden Serenades became a constant constitutive element of Bamberg’s cultural summer programme.

In 1982, the concert series slipped under the roof of an association. The programme offered could be enlarged, this only being made possible due to various benefits and sponsorings. Besides the rose garden and – in case of bad weather – the “Kaisersaal” of the New Residence – other locations were also used for hosting the concert series: the St. Michael church for church music concerts, the “Wilde-Rose-Keller” for Jazz concerts and also the court of the former summer residence of Bamberg’s prince bishops, Seehof Palace.

All these years the Rose Garden Serenades  have been able to engage first class soloists and ensembles. Several artists should be named among the most remarkable moments of the concert series: the Cellists of the Cologne Philharmonic, the Bamberg organist Prof. Edgar Krapp, the Nuremberg Opera Studio, String Trio Berlin, Ensemble Agile Düsseldorf, Musica Antiqua Praha, Ikarus Quartet Karlsruhe, Wihan-Quartet Prague or the song recital with the Wagner tenor Siegfried Jerusalem...

The association’s goal is to enrich Bamberg’s and its surrounding’s cultural life with special concerts in a historical setting, thus we wish the attendants pleasant and entertaining evenings.
